• BREAKING INTO CHILDREN'S NONFICTION MAGAZINE WRITING 
  Magazine writing is a great way to get your feet wet in children's writing.  Build a clip file of magazine articles as a stepping stone to a book contract, or write for magazines as an end in itself---once bitten by the byline bug, it's hard to let go!  What does it take to break into children's nonfiction magazine writing?  An enthusiastic appreciation for "Ew!", "Cool!" and "Phew!" helps, but Fiona will share practical techniques, tips, and tools to shorten your journey to publication.  She'll take you through the ins and outs and quirks and peculiarities of writing for children's nonfiction magazine markets.  She'll cover article ideas, markets, and query letters, as well as touch on research, interviews and keeping track of it all.  Learn how to find out what editors want and how to sell it to them before you write it.  That first byline is just around the corner!

  Writing nonfiction so kids will "get it'
  Kids' curiosity knows no boundaries, so why should your writing?  This workshop will show how to explain and present nonfiction information of any type---not just science---to kids in ways that are fun, relevant, and easy to understand.  You'll come away with practical tools and creative ways to help kids "get it" while balancing simplification and accuracy.  Ancient history or solar physics for 9-year-olds?  No problem.  
  

• SO, YOU'VE WRITTEN A KIDS' BOOK...WHAT'S NEXT?
  Is it ready for a publisher? How and when do you find a publisher?  What do you send to the publisher?  What about illustrations? Can you publish it yourself?  When will you see your book in print?  Fiona will help you find the answers to these questions and more as she guides you through the maze of children's fiction and nonfiction genres and publishers.  You'll learn what editors want to see in a submission, how and when to approach them, and what you can do to improve your chances of acceptance.
